This yeasted sweet is attributed to Polish King Stanislao Leszczynsky, father-in-law of Louis XV. Exiled to Lorraine (a French province) after losing the Polish Succession War in 1738, he decided to improve upon the region's famed Kugelhupf (a sweet leavened cake) by spiking it with rum.
